After days of cruising through the breathtaking wilderness of the Broughtons, today was a much-needed reprovisioning and rest day in Port McNeill, BC. It’s a day that we dedicated to not just refueling the boat and replenishing our supplies, but also to recharge ourselves—mentally and physically—before deciding on the next leg of our journey.

Our first priority was to catch up on some photo and video editing. With the stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife we’ve encountered, we have a treasure trove of memories captured on camera. From the misty mornings and calm waters to the playful dolphins and majestic humpbacks, there’s no shortage of moments to relive and share. Editing these photos and videos allows us to reflect on the journey so far and prepare to share these experiences with others who might be following our adventure.

Last night, we ventured out to Devis Bath Brewing Company for some well-deserved relaxation. After a day spent on the water, there’s something incredibly satisfying about enjoying a cold beer and a hot pizza. Devis Bath did not disappoint—the craft beers were refreshing, and the pizza was just what we needed. The cozy atmosphere of the brewery was a perfect setting to unwind and chat with some of the locals and fellow travelers. It’s always fascinating to hear the stories of others on their own adventures.

Today, for lunch, we decided to treat ourselves at Gus’ Pub, a local favorite known for its delicious seafood. We couldn’t resist ordering the halibut and chips, as well as the halibut tacos. The halibut was fresh and perfectly cooked, with a crispy batter that complemented the tender fish inside. The tacos were equally impressive, with a burst of flavors that made each bite a delight. Gus’ Pub provided a fantastic, satisfying meal that hit the spot after a morning of editing and organizing our memories.

As we settle into this day of rest, we’re also taking the time to analyze the weather patterns. The forecast is playing a significant role in our decision-making process. It’s a classic mariner’s dilemma: do we stay longer in the cool, rugged beauty of the Broughtons, or do we head back toward the warmer waters of Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands? The temperature difference is notable—about 10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer in Desolation Sound, which is tempting as the chill of the Broughtons begins to set in.

The appeal of warmer weather is strong, but so is the draw of the Broughtons’ untamed wilderness. Each has its own charm, and we’re weighing the pros and cons of both. The decision isn’t easy, but that’s part of the adventure—embracing the unpredictability and making the most of wherever we choose to go next.
