Keeping the House Batteries Charged with Solar
For the winter, we took off a number of the solar panels that would have been completely destroyed in wind storms, but we did place 2 inside the fly bridge enclosure to help keep the batteries topped off. Although they are just temporarily zip tied in place they are doing the job of keeping the batteries topped up.
Here are the numbers on the solar output, nothing compared to the summer, but certainly enough to keep the batteries charged.
The two panels that we have connected are 110 Watt each panels.which means the maximum output in perfect sun would be 220 watts combined. On a good sunny winter day with the sun shining through the flybridge “glass” we seem to be getting at most about 54 watts at any time.
The MPPT and breaker switch seem to be in good shape under the salon sofa.
When spring comes and we are past the windy season, I plan to hook up all 8 of the solar panels. This time with at least 4 of them on the flybridge roof attached to the canvas and radar arch. Those 4 will be out of sight and out of mind. Then perhaps we will put 4 more on the roof of the pilothouse. We will see how the placement goes.
