Trip #6 – Kayak Cove

Sandy Point to Kayak Cove

This weekend our boat trip took us to Kayak Cove, near Kayak Point between Marysville and Stanwood for a family event.

On Friday we headed south from Sandy Point travelling west of Lummi Island, west of Cypress Island, west of Anacortes, through Deception Pass south through Skagit Bay, around Camano Head and north into Port Susan Bay to Kayak Cove.

This was my first time at the helm of a boat travelling through Deception Pass. We had some lunch to waste some time before attempting Deception Pass. We also watched a few other similar sized boats go through Deception Pass before starting our trip through. I had a new GoPro Hero 8 camera that we clipped on the windshield and shot the following video.

On the trip south we stopped at Cama beach park on Camano Island as a place to take the dogs to shore, do some swimming and playing around.

Cama Beach, Camano Island.

We ran into trouble with a bilge pump failure on the dinghy, and some rough water which lead to too much water on board on the dinghy. Lesson learned, install 2 bilge pumps in the dinghy so that when one fails you have a backup pump. Also, use the same bilge pumps in the dinghy as in the main boat so the spare parts are interchangeable. We ended up just using the davit to slightly lift the swamped dinghy and pulling plug while allowing it to drain before lifting it all the way to the upper deck.

We stayed 2 nights on anchor and had some pretty big waves during the night, but we did not end up dragging the anchor at all. It was my first time using the “Anchor Lite” Android app to alert me as we drift, that took some getting used to. It was also our first time using the new anchor chain that we installed a few weeks ago.

Our trip home took us south in Port Susan Bay around Camano head into Saratoga Passage, and North to Skagit bay, through LaConner to Padilla bay, a break on Saddlebag island, travelled north to Matia Island where we had dinner then back home to Sandy Point.

The total trip distance was about 126 miles according to OpenCPN that I used to plot the trip. That is by far the longest trip we have taken in a weekend.

Here are some photos of the trip through La Conner
