Trip #7 – Roche Harbor
Trip 7 to Roche Harbor marks the 13th and 14th nights that we have slept on the boat.
The route there was a bit different from usual. We had some time before our noon check-in at Roche so we took the relaxing light house tour, visiting the Patos Island Lighthouse and the Stuart Island Light House. That did put us near the border, but I kept a close eye on the charts to be sure to to enter Canadian waters. We had heard lately that due to the coronavirus the Canadians were fining, with a possibility of seizure US boats that travel into Canada even if they didn’t come to shore.
As we rounded the Stuart Island lighthouse we were approached, circled by and stopped by a US Coast Gaurd boat asking what our intentions were, where we had been and where we were going. They wanted to be sure that we knew that it was not allowed to enter Canadian waters. Then they of course followed up with the “do you know when to do when you come across orca or other whales.” Although we did see several seals and porpoise we did not see any whales on this trip.
We ended up in slip 2 at the Roche Harbor guest dock, not far from us was an Ocean Alexander 100ft boat, which really made our boat feel small. On saturday we ended up with neighbors on both sides that were also Bayliner 4788 Pilothouse’s.
With our location we were up close for the nightly flag ceremony.
Roche Harbor is one of best run destinations in the San Juan Islands. We are looking forward to our next visit.
Here are some other photos from our stay at Roche.
On the way home, we stopped off at Sucia Island had some dinner on board, then it was so warm we decided to jump off the upper deck into the water several times. What a blast.
