Sucia Island

This weekend we got away with a late start to one night on Sucia Island. We arrived on the island about 5pm to find the seasonal docks are now in place for the year. They take them out mid October to mid April. It was also a pleasant surprise to fine that there was plenty of dock space to moor on the dock for the the night. This marks the 46th day we have stayed on the boat.

We just had the generator serviced last week new filters and a new impeller. The generator is running well on this trip.

The weather was calm all night, with some waves picking up in the morning, but the Windy application assures us that by 5pm it will be much calmer for the trip home.

By about 8:15 Sunday morning we were the only boat on the dock. The other dock had a few boats on it. But being Easter Sunday perhaps people had places to be.

What I love about Sucia Island this time of year is the solitude. It is like being in nature, rather than the way it is on a busy summer weekend where it is more like a circus when the park is full.

Marcia installed a new drying rack for dishes in the galley. The 4788 doesn’t have the best space for doing dishes, the double sinks are nice, but it was always a challenge to stack the dishes somewhere for drying.

The new drying rack was a nice addition to the galley.

Here are some photos of Fossil Bay on Easter Sunday after most of the other boats cleared out. Not a single person in the campground today.

The lowest tide while we were on the dock was about a 0ft tide. I stood on the swim step and used the pike pole to check the depth. The water is just 6ft deep where we are moored in the photos above at a 0ft tide. Also, our Simrad depth sounder shows 3.5ft which is the depth from the transducer, which is about 2ft higher than the lowest point of the boat which is the rudder and the lowest point of the propeller. So 3.5ft on the Simrad indicates 1.5ft clearance from the bottom. Just making notes here as I won’t remember these measurements next season.

We went for a short stroll to the west side of the island to Shallow Bay, which brought back some memories if our first ever trip on the 4788.

In the picture above that is Patos Island in the distance in just the the right of Patos are some small white dots that are the outline of Point Roberts, WA and Twassen BC Canada.

One of our favorite islands to visit, so close to home, but a different world.
