Trip #8 – Cypress Island Day Trip

We started the day by dropping some crab traps that we will pick up tomorrow. Since marine area 7 north is not yet open for crabbing, we need to go just a bit south to marine area 7 south.

We headed south past Lummi Island and Lummi Rocks, on to Sinclair island and around to Pelican beach at Cypress Island.

Pelican Beach on Cypress Island

We had lunch anchored at Pelican Beach, and after going to shore we discovered that Pelican Beach was a “voluntary no anchoring” area, and that they recommend that you only use the DNR buoys for boats up to 50 feet.  If I had known that ahead of time, we would have grabbed one of the open buoys. Now we know for next time, however, the probably will not be a next time for Pelican Beach as this was an extremely rough section of water due to the amount of boat traffic travelling between Cypress and Sinclair islands. If you are planning to stay here on a busy summer boating weekend, be prepared for a constant barrage of boat wakes.

After leaving Pelican Beach we headed around the east of Sinclair island and then on to Clark Island.

Clark Island

We had plans to meet up with Alex on the SeaDoo to join us for dinner, but since personal water craft are not allowed in San Juan County we had to return to Whatcom Count and we met Alex at Legoe Bay near Village Point on Lummi Island. He had a fun trip on the SeaDoo, but most importantly he brought us the hamburger patties that we had forgot to load on board the boat for our dinner.

This trip was also our first trip with the new deck furniture for the upper deck (fiesta deck as we call it). When we purchased the boat the starboard side flybridge seating had been removed and replaced with a chest freezer. We removed the freezer and replaced it with some deck furniture that could be used inside the covered are of the fly bridge, or outside on the upper back deck when the dinghy is off. This was a good addition to the upper deck.

After dinner we returned home for the end of a fun day trip.
