Boating Through Dodd Narrows to Nanaimo: A Nautical Adventure in British Columbia
Embarking on a Memorable Journey
Our aquatic adventure began in the serene waters of the Gulf Islands, British Columbia. As seasoned boaters, we were prepared for a day of exploration and awe-inspiring views. Our destination was Nanaimo, a vibrant harbor city on Vancouver Island, accessible through the challenging yet captivating Dodd Narrows.
Approaching Dodd Narrows
The approach to Dodd Narrows is a boater’s delight, with the waterways nestled between lush, forested islands. As we neared the Narrows, the first glimpse of the narrow channel was both exhilarating and daunting. Dodd Narrows is infamous for its strong tidal currents, sometimes reaching up to 9 knots, making the passage through it a test of skill and timing.
Navigating the Narrows
Navigating Dodd Narrows requires precision and careful planning. The channel, at its narrowest, is barely 100 feet wide. The key to a safe passage is to traverse during slack tide, when the current is at its least powerful. As we entered the Narrows, the boat was met with swirling waters, but our timely approach meant we faced manageable currents.
The journey through Dodd Narrows is a unique blend of adrenaline and natural splendor. On either side, steep cliffs adorned with dense forests create a picturesque frame. The sight of eagles circling overhead and seals playing in the waters added to the enchanting experience.
The Beauty of the Passage
As we made our way through, the interplay of light and shadow, water and land, created a mesmerizing tableau. The narrowness of the passage allowed for an intimate view of the shoreline, revealing hidden coves and secluded beaches that are inaccessible by land.
Emerging into Nanaimo
Emerging from Dodd Narrows, the landscape opened up to the broader expanse of the Strait of Georgia. Ahead lay Nanaimo, with its bustling harbor and welcoming atmosphere. The contrast from the secluded passage of Dodd Narrows to the lively cityscape of Nanaimo was striking.

Upon reaching Nanaimo, we were greeted by the sight of colorful buildings, marinas filled with boats, and a lively waterfront. The city offers a perfect blend of urban amenities and natural beauty. We spent time exploring the local cuisine, strolling along the harborfront, and soaking in the laid-back island culture.
