A Journey from Sullivan Bay to Waddington Bay

Today’s leg of our adventure took us from the cozy confines of Sullivan Bay to the tranquil waters of Waddington Bay, covering a total of 31 miles and bringing our trip total to an impressive 592 miles. As we embarked on this journey, we were greeted by the dynamic and ever-changing conditions that make boating in the Broughton Archipelago both a challenge and a delight.

We set out on a westward route, eager to explore the waters, but were soon enveloped by a thick blanket of fog. The visibility dropped, turning the world around us into a muted landscape of grays and whites. While the fog lent a mysterious beauty to our surroundings, it also prompted us to reconsider our path. Safety is always paramount, so we adjusted our course, opting for the eastern route through the Broughton Islands instead.

This change in direction was more than just a safe navigation choice; it led us through some of the most stunning scenery we’ve encountered so far. The Broughton Islands revealed their rugged charm, with landscapes that ranged from rocky shorelines at sea level to towering mountains, still crowned with patches of snow despite the summer season. The contrast between the deep blue waters and the snowy peaks was nothing short of breathtaking, reminding us of the wild beauty of this remote region.

Fishing was on the agenda today, but the fish seemed to have other plans. Despite our best efforts, we came up empty-handed, a common theme on this trip. Yet, the experience of being out on the water, casting lines with hopes high, is always rewarding in its own right. There’s something about the anticipation and the peacefulness of the activity that makes it worthwhile, even when the fish aren’t biting.

Nature, however, had its own surprises in store. Throughout the day, we were treated to sightings of three magnificent humpback whales. These gentle giants graced us with their presence, surfacing with their characteristic blows and showing off their massive tails as they dove back into the deep. Each sighting was a reminder of the rich marine life that inhabits these waters and a highlight of our journey.

As we approached Waddington Bay, revealing the bay’s calm waters and serene environment. After a day of navigating through fog and fishing without success, arriving in this peaceful anchorage felt like the perfect way to end the day. The beauty of Waddington Bay, combined with the day’s adventures, left us with a deep sense of contentment.

With 592 miles now behind us, each day continues to bring new experiences, challenges, and moments of awe. Today was a perfect example of how even the unexpected—like a sudden fog bank—can lead to some of the most memorable parts of the journey. As we settle in for the night, the stillness of Waddington Bay surrounds us, and we can’t help but feel grateful for the incredible journey we’re on.
