Day 13: From Von Donop Marine Park to Chameleon Harbour – A Day with the Whales

Today marked another incredible leg of our journey through the Discovery Islands. We set off from the peaceful Von Donop Marine Park, our sights set on Chameleon Harbour, with a quick stop at Heriot Bay for some much-needed groceries.

The waters were alive with marine life, offering us a spectacular show of nature’s wonders. As we cruised along, we were thrilled to spot a playful group of Pacific white-sided porpoises. Their speed and agility never cease to amaze us, and their presence always brings a sense of joy and excitement.

Our luck continued as we encountered several humpback whales. These majestic giants of the sea graced us with their presence, their massive tails slapping the water as they prepared for deep dives. There’s something humbling about being in the company of such enormous creatures, knowing they’ve traveled thousands of miles across the oceans.

We also spotted one lone male Orca at the start of our day. Their sleek black and white bodies cut through the water with a grace that belies their power. Watching them glide alongside us was a moment of pure awe.

Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, Marcia, with her sharp eyes, spotted a Minke whale. It was a rare and exciting sighting, adding to the already remarkable tally of marine mammals we’ve encountered today.

After all the excitement, we made our way to Heriot Bay, where we docked to pick up groceries. The stop was quick but necessary, allowing us to replenish our supplies before heading off again.

Finally, we arrived at Chameleon Harbour, a serene and secluded spot that offered the perfect ending to our day. The total distance covered today was 57 miles, bringing our journey’s grand total to 380.5 miles. As we anchored and settled in for the night, we couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences we’ve had so far. The Discovery Islands continue to captivate us with their beauty and the wildlife that calls this place home.

At Chameleon Harbour we were one of 6 boats in the harbour, it was vary quiet, which was a nice change from some of the busier harbours that we encountered.

Tomorrow brings new adventures, and we can’t wait to see what lies ahead. We plan to meet up with the Bellingham Yacht Club at Blind Channel, not far from our current location.
