Journey from Lagoon Cove to Shoal Bay

Navigating Chatham Channel, Johnstone Strait, Cordero Channel, and Green Point Rapids

Today’s voyage from Lagoon Cove to Shoal Bay on Thurlow Island was a thrilling adventure, showcasing the dynamic forces of the BC waterways. Covering 58 miles, this journey became the second-longest day of our adventure so far, bringing our total distance to an impressive 727 miles.

We began our day with some fun currents at Chatham Channel, just outside of Lagoon Cove. The swift waters provided an exhilarating start, waking us up and setting the tone for the day’s journey. Chatham Channel, known for its narrow passage and strong currents, delivered exactly what we expected—an exciting and memorable challenge.

After successfully navigating Chatham Channel, we made our way into Johnstone Strait. This stretch of water is famed for its wide, open expanses and strong tidal currents. The scenery was nothing short of spectacular, with towering cliffs and lush forests lining the strait. The conditions were favorable, and we made good progress, enjoying the vastness of the strait and the sense of being surrounded by wilderness.

Our route then led us into Cordero Channel, another breathtakingly beautiful passage. With the wind and current at our back, we were pushed along effortlessly, making for a smooth and enjoyable trip through this scenic channel. The landscape here is rugged and remote, with dense forests cascading down to meet the water’s edge.

As we approached Green Point Rapids near Blind Channel, the power of the water was now against us. We were slowed for about 10 minutes going at about 5mph to get through Green Point Rapids. The surrounding landscape, with its rugged coastline and dense forests, provided a stunning backdrop to this part of our journey.

Arriving at Shoal Bay felt like a well-deserved reward after the lively waters we had just traversed. We docked at the public pier next to the charming cottages that dot the shoreline, immediately feeling the calm and serenity of this remote location. Shoal Bay, with its rich history and tranquil environment, is a hidden gem on Thurlow Island. The rustic cottages add a touch of charm, making it feel like a step back in time.

As we reflect on the day’s journey, we’re reminded of the beauty and power of the natural forces that guide our way. From the playful currents at Chatham Channel to the expansive beauty of Johnstone Strait, the smooth passage through Cordero Channel, and the exhilarating ride through Green Point Rapids, today was a day of adventure and discovery. Now, as we relax at Shoal Bay, we look forward to exploring more of this beautiful region and seeing what tomorrow’s waters have in store. We are very thankful to be tied to a dock rather than on anchor in todays wind.
