Journey from Nanaimo to Clam Bay: A Day on the Water

Today’s voyage took us from the bustling harbor of Nanaimo to the serene Clam Bay at Thetis Island, a journey that offered both excitement and tranquility. Covering a modest distance of 19 miles, it was a day filled with remarkable sights and the simple pleasure of being on the water. This brings our total trip to 985 miles, marking Day 37 of this wild and unforgettable journey.

Waiting at Dodd Narrows

Our day began with the anticipation of transiting through Dodd Narrows, a passage known for its swift currents and narrow channel. As we approached the narrows, we joined a few other boats waiting for the right moment to pass. The waters were calm, and the sun shone brightly, making the wait a pleasant one.

While idling, we were treated to an unexpected and impressive sight—a Canadian Cost Gaurd hovercraft. The sheer size and speed of the hovercraft were awe-inspiring. We watched in amazement as it maneuvered with precision, a stark contrast to our leisurely pace.

Passing Through Dodd Narrows

As the current slackened, it was our turn to navigate through Dodd Narrows. The passage was uneventful, just the way we like it, but the scenery was stunning. The rocky shores, dotted with evergreens, framed the narrow waterway, and the clear blue sky above made for a picturesque backdrop. Just as we breathed a sigh of relief after safely passing through, nature provided another spectacle.

Orcas on the Move

Shortly after clearing the narrows, we spotted a pod of orcas traveling northbound, moving swiftly through the water. Their black dorsal fins cut through the waves with grace and power, a sight that never fails to captivate us. When we first saw them, we stopped the boat, allowing them to pass, appreciating the beauty and majesty of these magnificent creatures. The orcas appeared to be on a mission, their rapid pace suggesting they had somewhere important to be. Please note the orcas in the video below were shot through a high zoom lens, then zoomed even further in editing. We were not actually that close.

Arrival at Clam Bay

After the excitement of the orca sighting, we continued on our way to Clam Bay, a tranquil anchorage nestled between Thetis Island and Penelakut Island. The bay welcomed us with calm waters and a gentle breeze, the perfect setting to unwind after our eventful day. We found a good spot to anchor, surrounded by a few other boats, each tucked into their own little corner of the bay.

The peaceful surroundings of Clam Bay offered a stark contrast to the bustling activity we’d experienced earlier in the day. As evening set in, the water turned to glass, reflecting the vibrant colors of the sunset. We settled in for the night, content with the day’s adventures and looking forward to exploring more of Thetis Island tomorrow.

Today’s journey reminded us why we love cruising these British Columbia waterways. From the unexpected encounter with a Canadian Coast Gaurd hovercraft to the thrill of seeing orcas, and finally the serenity of Clam Bay, it was a day that perfectly encapsulated the joys of boating. With 985 miles now behind us, and just a few days left on this remarkable 37-day journey, we’re soaking in every moment.
