Day 15 – On to the Broughtons
Today we embarked on a 52-mile journey from Blind Channel to Lagoon Cove, traveling along the scenic but challenging Johnstone Strait. The waters were lively, with currents that kept us on our toes throughout the day. It was fascinating to watch our speed fluctuate dramatically between 5 mph and 12 mph, all without a single adjustment to the engine. The power of nature was fully on display.
Here is the route for today, 52 miles.
Here is a short video that Marcia took of all 5 of the Bellingham Yacht Club boats leaving Blind Channel today.
As we cruised along, we were treated to a few memorable wildlife sightings. A majestic humpback whale made a brief appearance, its enormous tail flicking gracefully before it disappeared beneath the surface. A little later, four playful Pacific white-sided dolphins joined us, leaping and darting around the boat as if to welcome us to their waters.
We weren’t alone on this leg of the journey—our flotilla of five boats from the Bellingham Yacht Club traveled together, creating a small community on the move. The camaraderie among the group made the miles pass more quickly.
Upon our arrival at Lagoon Cove, we gathered with our fellow travelers for a potluck appetizer feast. The spread was as diverse as it was delicious, with everyone contributing their favorite bites. The evening was filled with laughter, stories, and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that only a day on the water can create.
Before settling in for the night, we set down our crab and shrimp traps, hopeful for a bountiful catch by morning. The promise of fresh seafood adds an extra layer of anticipation to tomorrow’s adventures. This time we had a bit of advice from the locals on where to put the traps.
As the sun set over Lagoon Cove, reflecting off the calm waters, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for another day of exploration and connection in this breathtaking part of the world.
Here is our whale count so far.
