Wildlife Encounters in Desolation Sound, the Discovery Islands, and the Broughton Archipelago

This summer, we embarked on an unforgettable 39-day boating adventure through some of British Columbia’s most stunning coastal regions: Desolation Sound, the Discovery Islands, and the Broughton Archipelago. With our vessel stocked and spirits high, we set sail eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and abundant wildlife these areas have to offer.

Desolation Sound: The Journey Begins

Our voyage commenced in Desolation Sound, a paradise renowned for its warm waters and serene fjords. Almost immediately, we were greeted by playful harbor seals basking on sun-warmed rocks. As we navigated through the calm waters of Prideaux Haven, pods of porpoises surfaced alongside our boat, their sleek bodies glistening in the sunlight.

Wildlife Highlights:

  • Harbor Seals: We observed numerous seals lounging and diving, especially around secluded coves.
  • Porpoises: These curious creatures often accompanied us, leaping gracefully through the water.
  • Bald Eagles: Majestic eagles soared overhead, occasionally diving to snatch fish from the sea.

One morning, anchored near Tenedos Bay, we took a hike to Unwin Lake. Along the trail, we spotted a black bear foraging for berries, completely unfazed by our presence. Keeping a respectful distance, we marveled at this powerful yet serene animal in its natural habitat.

The Discovery Islands: A Tapestry of Nature

Leaving Desolation Sound, we steered toward the Discovery Islands. The waterways here were a bit more challenging, with tidal currents requiring careful navigation. However, the rewards were immense.

Wildlife Highlights:

  • Orcas (Killer Whales): Near Campbell River, we had a heart-stopping encounter with a pod of orcas. Watching them breach and tail-slap was a surreal experience.
  • Dall’s Porpoises: Their black and white bodies zipped through the water, sometimes weaving playfully around our boat.
  • Sea Lions: At Mitlenatch Island Nature Provincial Park, we observed a colony of Steller sea lions basking and roaring—a symphony of nature.

We also visited quaint communities like Cortes Island, where we learned about local conservation efforts and the rich Indigenous history of the area. Kayaking through the serene inlets, we encountered river otters and a plethora of bird species, including herons and kingfishers.

The Broughton Archipelago: Into the Wild

Our final leg took us further north into the remote Broughton Archipelago. The sense of isolation here was profound, and the landscape felt untouched by time.

Wildlife Highlights:

  • Humpback Whales: Perhaps the most awe-inspiring sight was witnessing humpback whales breaching near Blackfish Sound. Their sheer size and grace left us speechless.
  • Pacific White-Sided Dolphins: These energetic dolphins often appeared in large groups, their acrobatic displays a joyous spectacle.
  • Grizzly Bears: With a guided tour from a local Indigenous community, we observed grizzlies fishing along the riverbanks—a humbling and unforgettable experience.

The dense forests and mist-covered mountains provided the perfect backdrop for wildlife watching. We anchored near Echo Bay and spent evenings listening to the sounds of the wilderness, the calls of loons echoing across the water.

Reflections on an Unforgettable Journey

Over 39 days, we traversed diverse ecosystems, each offering unique wildlife encounters. From the playful seals of Desolation Sound to the majestic grizzlies of the Broughton Archipelago, the trip deepened our appreciation for British Columbia’s natural wonders.

Key Takeaways:

  • Respect for Nature: Observing wildlife responsibly ensures these creatures continue to thrive.
  • Preparedness: Navigating varied boating conditions was challenging but rewarding; proper planning is essential.
  • Cultural Richness: Engaging with local communities enriched our journey, offering insights into the history and stewardship of these lands.

As we sailed back home, the sunsets seemed more vibrant, and the air fresher. The memories of the wildlife we encountered will forever be etched in our minds. We encourage fellow boating enthusiasts to embark on their own voyages, always with respect for the magnificent creatures that inhabit these waters.
